GS p. 201
My friends don’t share my love of travelling. They usually spend their holidays in their country houses or summer camps. And they think I’m crazy to spend holidays at “some place in another country”. Travelling doesn’t bother them. They are satisfied with’ the Discovery Channel.* I think they don’t understand that they can get a lot out of travelling. I feel excited to learn different languages and visit various tourist attractions. But travelling is not only excursions, historical sights or wonderful seaside resorts. You can have entertainment and learning at the same time. During your trip you could meet so many people from different countries, learn about their culture and traditions and make new friends. I think about what my friends are missing and feel sorry for them. (Jennifer Sellers, 18)
If you like travelling, why shouldn’t you travel? I personally hate travelling. It always takes a lot of energy and I prefer just relaxing and doing nothing on holidays. On the other hand I can’t say that travelling is a bad thing. Travelling is a great opportunity to learn about the world you live in. It shows you that there are more places of interest outside your hometown. Travelling is for people who want to get new experience and impressions during their holidays. Actually, I have never teen very adventurous, so travelling is not for me, thanks! (Jeremy Tam, 16)
I’ve never been keen on the idea of travelling. Actually, I’m a stay-at-home’ kind of person. Some people can say I’m boring and unadventurous. But just imagine, your family and friends are near you. And you don’t have to wait at the air ports. You can choose your favourite food and speak your own language. So, where could this fantastic place be? My favourite destination is my hometown There are not many sights where I live. But I could travel by bus round the town or walk along the streets. Travelling is not just visiting new places all the time. When in your hometown, you could also have a lot of wonderful impressions. As the saying goes, home, sweet home. (Alison Bright, 15)
3) Which of the young people could do the following on their holidays? Prove it from the texts
• make a long distance tour abroad
• relax in front of the telly
• not travel far from home
• go on a package holiday
• go on excursions to various tourists attractions
The film is boring скучный.
I am bored with the film. . скучаю …
4) How do Jennifer, Jeremy and Alison spend their holidays?
In my opinion the only person who has a nice holidays is Jennifer. She spends her time learning and entertaining herself at one time. If you ask me, I think you will have an opportunity’ to sit a home when you get old. All things considered I don’t approve of Jeremy’s and Alison’s way of spending their holidays.
Топик My trip to England
Imagine waking up one day in a country that you`ve never been to and know no one there. It is an incredible experience, and something that people will remember forever.
Before visiting the country we have some stereotypes about the life there, which are broken after the trip. And England isn`t an exception. People think that the British are hard-hearted and unsociable. But they aren`t. The Russians are always welcome in England. If you ever visit it, there will always be a little part of your heart.
I am very interested in British culture, history and people. So, my visit provided me with a good opportunity to compare what I already know about England with the real life. I am grateful to fate, to my parents and teachers, that in July in 2009, I went to England. This was preceded by years of hard English lessons, a successful passing of international exams of different levels, exhausting trip to Moscow for processing the documents. But at last a group of like-minded people and I are in England .
It was amazing and immediately struck me. The first days were introductory, and then I could navigate in Guildford, in the city, where we lived. But let me start from the very beginning.
When we arrived, we went to our families. I was inexpressibly glad to meet these people. It was my first experience of communicating with the British. I expected them to be rather cold, full of traditions, but it turned out that they are very kind-hearted and hospitable. Within 2 weeks I lived with the owners of the house (Cranstone; husband and wife) and 2 girls — from Spain (Anna) and Turkey (Oykyu). The first day I was very tired and, unfortunately, was not capable to do something. But the very next day we went on a trip to London.
Arriving there, I was absorbed with the emotions! It was amazing: we were riding on the biggest Ferris wheel, and then went to the Madame Tussads` Museum that I wanted to visit. There I had the opportunity to be photographed with wax figures of celebrities and to go to the room of fear . it was terrifying, my heart took in heels! It was very scary, but I endured, and then just laughed at the idea of the room. The museum had many interesting things to see.
The next day I went to school for the first time. I had the opportunity to see the conditions in which teenagers learn English. Children at my school were from lots of different cultures, but that didn`t stop us being friends. At first I could not remember the way to school, but I my neighbor, living for 2 weeks in Guildford, helped me. It turned out that I lived near the center of our town.
On Wednesday, we had another tour — to Oxford. I had a lot of emotions from it. It was just incredibly exciting to look at the famous University of Oxford, which I much heard about! Upon arrival in England it was hard to get used to the language and how to communicate it. I took a very visible difference between the Russian, speaking English and the British. But after the first few trips I used to and learnt a lot. And of course it was great to visit the famous hall, where the action of world famous movie about Harry Potter has taken place. It was just incredibly exciting to feel like the heroine of this film. My dream was realized!
Except trips to other cities I was walking with my friends along the streets of the city every day after classes. They were totally different from our Russian ones. For example, the main street, often called, High Street, was lined with stone, everywhere one could see windows of various shops. It is worth noting that the local bakery was very good, clothes were much cheaper than in Russia, but the food, by contrast, was very expensive.
On Saturday, we had an excursion to London again. We gladly walked through Trafalgar Square, looked at Buckingham Palace, the queen was in the castle at that time, as it was raised the state flag on the Palace, saw Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, visited the historical London museum.
Before being in London, I thought that it`s the tourist centre, full of foreigners. But I was wrong, because it looked like Moscow. Like most capital cities, it was noisy, polluted and congested with traffic.
On Wednesday we had the last excursion in Portsmouth. As for me it was probably the most exciting. We visited the old museum ships, including the oldest and one of the most famous, the ship Victoria, on which Admiral Nelson has sailed. In Portsmouth, I visited the museum, consisting of a single ship, hauled from the ocean floor. It was under water for a long time, so now he is behind a glass, and it a jet of water sent it as the ship won`t disintegrate into small particles.
Friday was the last day in England. I would stay in England at least another slightly. But, unfortunately, we left on Saturday. So I tried to bypass all of the most beautiful parts of Guilford, which I knew. At home, I interacted with my neighbors; we exchanged e-mails to write to each other, arriving at home. That was the last day in this country for me and Oykyu, so we packed our suitcases, and then decided to have a farewell dinner. We went to the store and buy various delicacies, and then sat down in front of TV and chatted. It was very funny! I wish I could repeat it again!
Saturday- the day when we went home. On the one hand, it was sad, but, on the other hand, it was glad for me to realize that soon I will come home!
When I came back I had my own impressions, my own personal experience and new image of England, I would like to share with my friends. I broke my stereotypes about people, cities and life in them. In conclusion, I would like to say that I have received a lot of emotions and increased the skill of communicating in English. The trip helped me a lot: I found new friends who are still talking with. I hope that next year, I will visit England, this wonderful country again!

26 Simple Ways to Make Your Life More Exciting
Last Updated on October 12, 2020
If someone were to write a book about your life, would the title be something like The Predictable Tale of (Insert Your Name Here)’s Monotonous Existence — or would it be The Exciting Escapades of (Your Name)’s Wild and Adventurous Life ?
Your real life probably falls somewhere in-between agonizing moments and wanton exhilaration — perhaps long stretches of boredom (or busyness) interspersed with moments of joy. (And even fun and joy can become predictable with repetition.)
As creatures of habit, our routines are comfortable and comforting. We, humans, tend to resist too much excitement even while we long to live a more exciting life.
Living an exciting life appears great in theory, but it’s a bit daunting when we’re faced with the possibility of actually doing something to make it exciting.
Want to live an exciting life?
Does it mean we have to take up skydiving?
Drive an expensive red sports car?
Those are exciting for sure, but most of us don’t have the money or the stomach for that kind of excitement on a regular basis. In fact, I think excitement is relative to our individual personalities and life circumstances.
At age 26, excitement for me was moving to New York for a fashion career. At age 36, with two toddlers under age three, my thrill was leaving the house for a couple of hours to walk around WalMart.
You don’t have to do or be something dramatic to have a more interesting and exciting life. Small and simple changes, shifts in thinking, and self-improvement stretches can shake up your world enough to make it more fun, fascinating and adventurous — on your own terms.
You can get out of the rut of your everyday routine and put some sparkle into your lifestyle with just a little creative thinking and planning.
Want a list of ways to make life more interesting?
Here are 26 simple living ideas of interesting things to do.
1. Make room. It’s hard to add excitement to your life if your life is overflowing with mindless tasks and chores. Can you simplify, delegate, or eliminate any of these boring and mindless tasks to make room for excitement? Sometimes we fill our lives with these things in order to avoid stretching ourselves toward happiness. Is that you?
2. Shake up your morning routine. Instead of following the same wake-up routine every day, do it differently on occasion. Get up ten minutes early and have breakfast outside. Turn off the TV and put on music. Make love before work. Drive a different way. Just starting your day differently will give you a little thrill.
3. Be the host. Take the initiative to entertain, and invite friends or family over for dinner or something different — like a wine tasting or game night.
4. Move your furniture. Rearrange or redecorate a room, switching things up enough that it feels new and different.
5. Go cheer. Attend a competitive, fast-paced sporting event like tennis, basketball, or racing where the energy and excitement of the sport is contagious.
6. Get a makeover. Get a new haircut, have your make-up done by a pro, buy a new outfit, or try a new style. It’s even more fun if you do this with a friend.
7. Cut a rug. Now wear that new outfit or haircut to go out to a dance club — or just dance at home with great music and friends.
8. Find exciting people. Look around at people you know whose lives seem interesting and exciting. Take the initiative to get to know them so that you can be included in some of their excitement.
9. Plan an adventure trip. Even if you can’t afford to take a trip now, just researching, planning, and dreaming can give you a boost and build excitement for the time when you can afford to go. Include saving money as part of your planning!
10. Learn something new. Study a new language, a new skill, a hobby. You will open doors to meeting new people who share your interests and abilities and gain a sense of confidence and achievement.
11. Shake up your sex life. Be adventurous. Read the Kama Sutra. Join the Mile High Club. Find a new location. Just do it.
12. Get out of the house. Step away from the TV or computer and do something. Take a walk with a friend. Go to the bookstore and browse. Visit a local gallery or museum.
13. Go on a weekend excursion. Plan a fun getaway for 2-3 days for some outdoor or indoor adventure. REI offers a variety of adventure travel including some great weekend getaways if you want some ideas.
14. Test drive a sports car. Ok, so you may not be able to buy one, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try it out. Go take a spin behind the wheel of your favorite car.
15. Arrange a secret rendezvous. Surprise your beloved with a romantic evening or overnight hotel stay.
16. Try an unusual recipe. Cook something that you’ve never tried before or order something unusual at a restaurant that you wouldn’t normally try.
17. Read an adventure novel or thriller. Enjoy your excitement vicariously through a juicy, good book.
18. Go to a comedy club or mystery dinner theater. Have an exciting evening of laughs or thrills to shake up your routine weekend.
19. Write down your life vision. Spend some time thinking about your ideal life filled fun, excitement and adventure. Write down your vision and the actions you could take to get yourself there.
20. Adopt a pet. This is excitement plus responsibility, so be sure you are ready for both. A pet (especially a puppy) will be great company and provide fun opportunities to meet other pet people.
21. Go to a rock concert. Get tickets to your favorite band and take your favorite person to listen to some body-moving music.
22. Go skinny dipping. Night time is best if you don’t want the excitement of an arrest. Find a pool or a hot tub, strip down, and bring a loved one. Add a bottle of champagne for even more excitement.
23. Try a random act of kindness. Do something unexpectedly nice for a friend or a complete stranger. Pay for someone’s coffee. Send balloons. Leave a love note.
24. Be curious about people. Ask people (old and new friends) questions about their lives. Learn what other people do and what makes them tick. You might discover something intriguing about them and yourself.
25. Don’t wait. Don’t wait to try something, to initiate, to take action. Stop playing it safe or looking for someone else to take the lead. Be a creative creator of your life. You can make it as exciting and thrilling as you wish.
26. Do that one big thing. Is there one big action you’ve been holding back on that could turn your life from boring to amazing? Maybe it’s a job change, a move, a proposal, a change of scenery, a new relationship in your life. Whatever it is, take the first step. Action creates momentum, and momentum builds excitement.
For the most part, an exciting life doesn’t happen to you. (And when it does, it may not be the kind of excitement you want!) You need to find ways to jazz up your life in small ways by shifting your perspective — and changing some of your daily actions.
Small and fresh change can enliven you and create a new and exciting outlook on life.
The beach is a traditional summer destination for thousands of people. Everyone wants to go to the beach! Sun, surf, and sand are a magnetic lure for millions of visitors. The wealth of things to do includes sunbathing, jogging, boating, fishing and surfing. Ever presented breezes keep the temperature comfortable and the water warn. Beach cities are the centres for easygoing life styles. The newest trends in youth culture often originate there. For example, the roller-skating craze started on the Venice boardwalk.
Though sea, sun and sand are the same, people try to go to a different place every year, because fauna, and flora, and the air are different.
Spending holidays on the beach is a great rest though many people combine sunbathing with visiting museums and places of interest.
1. What is traditional destination for summer holidays?
2. Why do people want to go to the beach?
3. What can people do at the beach?
4. What makes temperature?
5. What often originates in the beach cities?
6. Why do people go to a different places?
People began to travel ages ago. The very first travelers were explorers who went on trips to find wealth, fame or something else. Their journeys were very dangerous but still people keep on going to the unknown lands.
Nowadays it is not as dangerous and much more convenient. Do you want to go somewhere? Hundreds of companies are there to help you. They will take care about your tickets and make all the reservations needed. You don’t speak the language of the country you go to? There are interpreters that will help you.
With modern services you can go around the world. You can choose the means of transport you like: plane, train, ship, bicycle or you can travel hiking.
Tourism became a very profitable business because people are ready to spend their money for the great opportunity to have a great time learning about new countries, going sightseeing, resting and enjoying themselves.
1. Who were the first travelers?
2. Were their journeys safe?
3. Why did they go on trip?
4. Is it more convenient to travel now?
5. What kinds of transport can you choose from?
6. Is tourism a profitable business? Why?

Travelling by train.
Modern life is impossible without travelling. Of course the fastest way of travelling is by plane. But many people make their choice on travelling by train as with a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. Travelling by train is of course slower than by air but it also has its advantages.
If you are going to travel by train you’d better book seats beforehand because many people are fond of travelling by train. There are some reasons why people choose railroad. Train is the cheap means of travelling. If it is summer outside it will be better to think of your trip before the vocation starts. To understand how true this is, you only have to go to a railway station. There you will see hundreds of people hurrying to catch a train. You’ll waste a lot of time standing near the booking-office trying to buy a ticket.
Modern trains have very comfortable seats in all passenger cars, and there are sleeping-cars and dining-cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable. You can buy first-class, second-class and third-class sleepers in a separate compartment. If you are early before the train starts you can leave your suit-cases in the compartment and walk up and down the platform. Some people forget when and from which platform and track their train will be off. They can always ask for the track, platform and train numbers at the railroad station information bureau and also get information about next trains and their schedules. There are express, slow and long-distance trains. If you want to go somewhere and get there as quickly as possible you’d better know that express trains only stop at the largest stations while slow trains stop at all stations. You can get to far countries only by a long-distance train.
Once you are in your compartment you have to ask the guide to bring in the bedding. There are usually two lower and two upper berths in a third-class sleeper compartment. Some people like to occupy upper berths because it is more convenient and exciting to travel. During your way on the train you can read newspapers, books, look out of the window, drink the tea, communicate with your neighbors or sleep. I prefer to look out of the window, because you can see the country you are passing through, and not only the clouds as when you are flying. You can have something to eat at the stations when the train makes stops.
Though we all seem to agree that the future belongs to air transport, the railroads today still carry a lot of passengers and goods.
People are fond of traveling. They spend their holidays traveling. They travel to see other countries and continents, to learn a lot about people’s traditions, to enjoy picturesque places. It is interesting for them to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food.
Those who live in the country like to find themselves in large cities with their shops, cinemas, crowds of people. City-dwellers usually like a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains with nothing to do but walking and bathing, lazying in the sun. Most travelers and holiday makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them — beautiful views of waterfalls, forests, unusual plants and animals. These photos will remind them of the happy time of holiday.
These are many ways of traveling — by train, by plain, by ship, on foot. Everyone chooses his favourite one. My favourite way is traveling by plain. And not because it is very comfortable. It is exciting. I also like traveling by train. I’ve traveled this way a lot. When you are in the train you can see the beauty of nature.
I envy the tourists because I think that they study geography traveling and visiting different parts of the world. They can tell you many things which you didn’t know before.
They are interesting people from whom you can learn much new for yourself. Any kind of travel helps you to understand many things that you can never see or learn at home. Though you may read about them in books and newspapers.
As for me I’d like to have a coach tour to some foreign country. Coach tours are planned and I’ll have a chance to do a lot of sightseeings and have a good rest at the same time.
Travelling by Air.
Modern life is impossible without travelling. Of course the fastest way of travelling is by plane. Many people prefer travelling by air as it is the most convenient, comfortable and quickest means of travelling. Travelling by plane has also its advantages and disadvantages.
If you are going to travel by air you’d better buy tickets beforehand because many people are fond of travelling by plane. There are some reasons why people choose that means of travelling. If it is summer outside it will be better to think of your trip before the vocation starts. To understand how true this is, you only have to go to an airport. There you will see hundreds of people hurrying to catch a plane. You’ll waste a lot of time standing near the booking office trying to buy a ticket.
Modern planes have very comfortable seats in all cabins, and there are first class, business and economy class cabins. Inside the cabin the air is always fresh and warm. Before the plane takes off the stewardess helps everyone get comfortable in the seats and wishes them a pleasant trip. She also gives all the information about the flight, the speed and the altitude. During the flight you can have something to drink and to eat. You can read newspapers and magazines or simply look out of the pothole. But you will sea nothing outside but the clouds. You can buy first-class, second-class and third class. You must be in time for your flight because you must have time to pass custom and passport controls and check in. Before boarding the plane the passenger must register at the airport. While registering he is required to have his luggage weighed. If the luggage weighs more than 20 kilograms you have to pay extra. Sometimes people forget the time and the number of the flight. They can always ask for that at the airport’s information bureau and also get information about next flights and their timetables.
Sometimes passengers don’t feel as if they are walking on good solid ground when on board the plane. They can get airsick and then travelling by air becomes a real torture for them.
Nowadays travelling by air is one of the dangerous means of travelling. There are a lot of air crashes and many people die in them. And I think people prefer safety to comfort on board a ship.
Though we all seem to agree that the future belongs to air transport, other means of travelling are still popular today.
