Where are you? Prepositions of place
Although this is a grammar point and you’d be advised to limit grammar input for primary learners, you can present the prepositions as units of vocabulary.
Children respond better to chunks of vocabulary that they can immediately use as opposed to lengthy grammatical explanations.
- To introduce prepositions of place – in, on, under, in front of, behind, above, below
- Using physical actions to demonstrate language and bring it to life
- A teddy
- Photocopies of shapes and faces
- Own large set of shapes and face
- Pre-drawn simple maps (one on a transparency)
- Large space for obstacle course — see further suggestions
Hide the teddy
- One person goes outside the classroom while everyone else decides where to hide the teddy. Once the teddy has been safely hidden the child can come back into the classroom.
- By asking questions they have to locate the teddy. The question structure you should practise with them first is: ‘Is the teddy on the floor?’ ‘Is the teddy in a bag?’
- Practise enough with you demonstrating and the whole class repeating the question so that when individuals have to do it they won’t feel nervous. The really young learners can go out in pairs.
Prepare a handout for each child with three large, simple shapes to be cut out — a smiley face, a cube and a cylinder. Prepare a set of shapes for yourself.
- They cut out the shapes and colour them in.
- On the board stick your cube and cylinder, then place your smiley face somewhere in relation to them but cover it up so the class can’t see.
- Tell them where you have put the face and they must do the same with their own shapes.
- Uncover your shapes so that they can compare with their own to see if they have correctly placed their face.
- They can then do this in pairs or groups to go from recognising prepositions of place to producing them themselves. They have to say, e.g., ‘The face is next to the cube.’
A great classic to practise recognising prepositions of place with sentences such as Simon says; ‘Put your hands on your head.’ Simon says; ‘Put your feet under your table.
- Be sure to use ‘Simon says’ when practising the harder prepositions so you can be sure they have understood and can reproduce the action. If Simon doesn’t ‘say’ to do something you can’t be sure they have understood!
Place the pen
- The class is split into two or more teams. Each team has a chair.
- Shout out the name of an object they can easily find in the room and a preposition of place e.g. ‘Put a book on the chair.’
- The designated team player must run and place the classroom object on, under, next to, behind… the chair depending on what you shouted out.
- If possible place two chairs at opposite ends of the classroom so that they can’t copy each other and can then compare afterwards.
Ways to demonstrate prepositions of place
- Use yourself and a small chair as a model. You stand next to it, put it on your head, stand behind it etc.
- Use two children as models for behind, next to… and three for ‘between’.
- Draw the box and smiley face below to show the relationship between two objects.
If you want to later move on to prepositions of movement – (over, around, through) you could use the following activities.
- If you have access to a large room or a safe area outside you can construct a mini obstacle course.
- Put the class into pairs and blindfold one of them. The other has to vocally guide their partner around the obstacle course.
- Make sure the course is safe and that the children are not left alone with their blindfolds on.
- Distribute a picture with easily recognizable landmarks such as a pond, river, bridge and tunnel.
- Show everyone on your copy where they should start with their pencils and then talk them through a simple journey. They should follow with their pencil. Have the journey clearly marked on a transparency that you can display afterwards so that they can check their own copy. This can also be done in pairs or small groups on a new map or rub off the pencil and start again.
Top 13 Preposition of Place Games for ESL Students
Preposition of place has always been one of my favourite units to teach. The grammar and vocabulary are pretty simple and the students seem to enjoy practicing it. However, it can be a bit of a challenge to come up with fun, interesting ESL preposition games to spice things up a bit.
Not to worry, however, check out my list of the Top 13 Preposition ESL games and activities to get you started.

13 Preposition of Place Activities
Okay, so if you’re looking for some preposition games and activities to use with your English learners, then you’re definitely in the right place. Keep on reading to see some of our best ones that you can try out today. Let’s get to it!
This is a classic, 4-skills ESL activity/game that is ideal for just about any level of student and almost any topic. The way it works is that you find a reading passage (or make your own) related to the topic of the day. In this case, it would have at least a few prepositions of place.
Then, you read the passage out more quickly than you normally would for the level of student. You want them to understand about 50% of what they heard. Then, students have to work together in pairs or small groups to piece the story together.
You can read it 1-2 more times and then have students compare their answers to the original. Check it out here: Dictogloss ESL Listening Activity.
#2 ESL Prepositions of Place Game: Memory Games
The topic of places is IDEAL for memory games. There are lots of different things you can do, but one of my favourites is to show students a simple city map. You know the kind I’m talking about: with square or rectangle buildings and a few different streets.
Have students study the map for a couple of minutes, and then take the picture off the screen. Ask them some questions and they can either answer as a class orally, or you can have students write down their answers. Ask them things like, “Where is the bakery?” or, “Is the movie theatre across the street from the bank?”

#3: Is that Sentence Correct?
If you’re teaching prepositions to beginners, you may want to try out this quick grammar review activity. The way it works is that mix up a few sentences in terms of word order. Then, students have to unscramble the sentences to make grammatically correct ones.
If you want to challenge more advanced level students, include 1-2 mistakes in terms of spelling or subject-verb agreement. Then, have students fix the mistakes AND also unscramble the sentences.

#4: Information Gap Activities
The way ESL information gap activities work is that there is a single set of information. Then, each pair or student gets that entire set of information, but each student gets only half of it. Then, they have to work together to uncover the entire information set.
Designed well, they can be an extremely rewarding, but challenging ESL activity and perhaps one of the most useful things you can do in class.
This kind of info gap activity lends itself extremely well to prepositions. For example, there might be a city map, but it’s uncertain where all the shops are in relation to each other.

#5: Flashcard Sentences
This very simple ESL game is ideal for kindergarten, or other young children. You can hold up a card with either a word or picture (prepositions in this case) and the student has to make a correct sentence with that word. If correct, they get the card. If incorrect, it goes back into the pile.
Flashcards are one of the best preposition of place ESL games. Learn more about them here: ESL Flashcard Activities.
#6 Preposition Game ESL: Concentration
This is one of my favourite ESL memory games. It’s ideal for beginners who are learning about prepositions for the first time. Make some cards with words (in front of, behind, next to, across from, etc.) and then have a corresponding picture.
Students mix up the cards, and place them face-down in an organized fashion. Then, they choose two and if correct, keep the cards. If incorrect, they place them back down in the same spot and the next person goes.
