Let’s play hopscotch!

What do we need:

chalk or sidewalk paint,
stones/bottlecaps or bean bags (flat stones are best, ‘cause they don’t roll)

Playing hopscotch is easy.

Take equal parts of cornstarch and water and a few drops of food colouring.

Homemade giant chalk recipe:

aluminum foil – фольга алюминиевая
disposable plastic container – пластиковый контейнер
plaster or gypsum – …

  • Cover one end of the toilet paper tube with duct tape.
  • Loosely roll an 12*20 cm piece of aluminum foil and slip it into the tube.
  • Set tube upright (duct tape side down) on protected surface.
  • In a disposable plastic container, help your child mix 1 cup plaster with 1/2 cup water. Stir slowly and thoroughly until plaster is dissolved, about 1 minute.
  • Immediately add 2 tablespoons paint (or more for brighter chalk color). Mix thoroughly.
  • Spoon into the tube. Tap gently so mixture settles to the bottom.
  • Let dry overnight before using.

Loose –
Set upright –
Stir —
Dissolve —
Spoon –
Tap – постучать
Mix thoroughly –
Let dry –

  1. If you’re the first player you throw your marker on the number one (the closest square) and hop over it.
  2. Move up to ten, hopping on each square. —
  3. All hops are done on one foot for each “single” square, unless there are two squares side by side, in which case you hop down on both feet.

  1. Once you get to ten you must turn around and hop back again. Carefully bend down to pick up the marker on the way back.
  2. Next time you throw the marker on # 2 and keep going! —

bend down — наклоняться
pick up — поднимать

You can’t lose your balance and you must always remain on that one foot. —
You lose your turn if your marker doesn’t hit your intended square, if you lose your balance on the hopscotch grid, or if you forget to hop over your square.

Hopscotch

Hopscotch, age-old children’s game based on an idea of not treading on lines. Variations of the game are played in many countries. The game’s English name expresses its object: to hop over the “scotch,” a line, or scratch, drawn on the ground. Lines are drawn in a variety of patterns. Spaces in the diagrams are numbered, and they must be traversed in order.

In one version of the game, the player tosses a small, flat marker such as a stone or a beanbag into the first numbered space. If the marker does not land clearly in the correct space, without touching a line, the player loses a turn. If the stone does land fairly, the player hops on one foot to the second square and thence through the succeeding squares, in order and without touching a line, falling, or dropping the trailing foot. In some diagrams there are certain pairs of squares where the player jumps with both feet. In other diagrams, certain squares may designate rest spaces, in which the player may put both feet down. Upon reaching the last numbered square, the player turns and moves through the spaces as before, lifts the marker, and hops out of the diagram. A player who completes the diagram without making a mistake may continue, tossing the marker into the second square, hopping into the first space then over the second and into the third, and so on, until the whole diagram has been played in this manner. On completing the diagram, the player may initial any one of its spaces, which space the other players must then avoid, although the initialing player may use it as a rest space. The game ends by mutual consent or when all spaces have been initialed. The player who has initialed the most spaces is the winner.

In a common variation, the marker must be kicked with the hopping foot from space to space. Or the player tosses the marker into the first space, then hops on one foot into that space and kicks the marker back across the base line and out of the diagram, continuing this procedure for each space in sequence. In Hinkspiel, a German variation, a player who completes the sequence turns away from the diagram and tosses the marker over her shoulder. The space in which it lands is her “house,” a rest space that the other players must then avo > Igbo girls in Nigeria the game is known as swehi. The diagram is drawn in sand, and a stone or a ball of crushed leaves is used as a marker. The rules resemble those in the German game of Hinkspiel. In swehi, if the player’s stone is tossed on a line, she is out of the game. At the end of the game, the players make drawings in each of the squares.

Hopscotch may also be played with a spiral diagram (this variant is known as escargot in France, for the spiral of the snail shell), in which players hop on one foot to a central rest spot and then back out again. Each player who succeeds may initial a space. The game continues until it becomes impossible to reach the centre or until all spaces are initialed.

How to play Hopscotch

Chalk it up to good old-fashioned fun — hop, skip, and jump a sequenced course to the end.

Requires

  1. At least 2 people, but more people make for more fun
  2. Sidewalk chalk

Game play

Traditionally, this game was carved with a stick in the dirt, but with the advent of sidewalk chalk, dirty feet are a thing of the past. A hopscotch course typically looks like a series of numbered squares.

The first player tosses a marker (rock, coin) into the first square; it must land within the confines of the square without bouncing out or touching a line.

The player then hops through the course, making sure to skip the square with the marker in it. Players hop in single squares with one foot (either foot is fine), and use two feet for the side by side squares, one in each square.

Upon completion of the hop sequence, the player continues her turn, tossing the marker into square number two and repeating the pattern.

Loss of turn occurs when a player:

  • Steps on a line
  • Misses a square with her marker toss
  • Loses balance

Players begin their next turn where they last left off.

Objective

The first player to finish one full course for each numbered square is the winner — careful not to step on any lines!

A rose by any other name

This game has international appeal, though it goes by different monikers:

  • New Yorkers call it Potsy
  • Persians call it Laylay
  • French call it Escargot (snail), but Bosnians use their word for it — Puz
  • Germans and Austrians dub it Himmel und Hölle (Heaven and Hell)
  • In India, it goes by kith- kith or Ekhat-Dukhat (one two houses)

Hopscotch Rules — How to Play

Rules to Hopscotch :

The first player stands at the starting position (in front of the first square) and throws their shooter into square one. That player then hops over square 1 and goes up the course, landing with one foot in each square. Where there are 2 squares next to each other (squares 3 & 4 and 6 & 7) the player can put both feet down at the same time. When the player reaches the end box, she must turn around and hop back to the beginning. If the player’s foot touches a line, they end their turn and the next player goes.

Once the player has successfully completed the first turn, they then pick up their shooter, return to the start position, and must throw it to land on the second square. If the shooter lands in square 2, the player goes up & down the hopscotch – this time skipping over square 2. If they make it successfully up and back (without touching a line), they get their shooter and try to throw it in square 3, and so on.

Variations of Hopscotch:
Instead of throwing the shooter, you have to stand on one leg and kick the shooter with the other foot.
Do all the odd numbers first, then do all the even numbers.
Expert:В You have to do all of the even numbers backwards (jump backwards without skipping the line)
